Welcome to the Chieftain's Hall

As you enter the hall, you step into the chieftain's principal chamber. The roof-supporting posts have been positioned closer to the outer walls to create more space for activities around the central hearth. These central posts are noticeably larger and stronger than the others, supporting a heavier structure with a raised roof that allowed additional daylight to enter through small roof openings.

The hall at Veien is exceptionally large, indicating the high level of power held by the local chieftain. This was a place where people of high status gathered for both celebration and serious discussion. Here, tables were laid with fine food and drink for feasts. The fire provided warmth and light, and those present experienced a sense of belonging within the chieftain's sphere of power while finding their place in the social order. Or perhaps some encountered resistance, confrontation, and social challenges?

Politics was debated, wars were planned, the economy was managed, funeral feasts were held, and prestigious marriages were arranged—all elements that shaped life during the Iron Age, directed by society's highest-ranking leaders from the chieftain's high seat. The decisions made in the chieftain's hall naturally had consequences for the wider community, making it important for people from every level of society to maintain, in their own way, a connection to the events unfolding within this centre of power.
